On Sunday, January 31, 2009 at 2:00pm, the children’s choirs of St. Peter's Lutheran Church and the 1st Presbyterian Church of Port Jervis will present the 9th annual “Joy of Music” concert. The public is invited to the concert, which will be held in St. Peter’s sanctuary at 31 West Main Street in Port Jervis. The concert will feature music by the children’s choirs along with several selections featuring the adult choir of St. Peter’s. A reception will follow. A free will offering will be taken which will go toward the youth choir camp fund, which annually sends children’s choir members to a week -long choir camp in Wilkes-Barre, PA. This camp is run by the Royal School of Church Music in America (RSCM), a national organization which hosts many such camps across the United States each summer all of which strive towards excellence in choral singing among young people. The Grace Choir leads traditional worship Sunday mornings, and prepares special music for festivals in the church. Rehearsals are Wednesdays 7:30 PM - 9 PM beginning Sept. 9, in the sanctuary September through May. The Hope Choir is for children in kindergarten through grade two. It meets on Wednesdays, beginning Sept. 16, September through May from 4:00 to 4:45pm. The emphasis is on singing, moving to music, learning beginning music fundamentals using children’s songs and folksongs of the church. Children also begin to learn about worship leadership. Activities include playing small percussion instruments, Orff instruments (xylophone type) and world music drumming. New members welcome at any time.

The Joy Choir is for children in grades three through eight and meets on Wednesdays, beginning Sept. 16, September through May, from 4:45 to 5:45pm. Choir members will continue to develop the basics of reading music notation and the fundamentals of good singing while developing leadership skills for worship. Activities include playing Orff instruments, singing in unison and parts, and world music drumming. New members are welcome at any time.
